OK I'll let him off  (It's not normally the rain that kills them, its the wind that comes with it - I've lost one at each of the last 3 GP's! )

To be honest I didn't.  The information I gathered from other forums led me to believe that reprogramming the cluster requires dealer-level equipment like GT1 that's beyond to reach of most independents because it is ridiculously expensive.  They'd be using either CarSoft like me or PA Soft, which is similar to CarSoft and, although more advanced, still would not give the required access.  According to a cluster-repair company which I called CarSoft has overwritten something important that it shouldn't have and the cluster requires an EEPROM reflash, taking the hex dump from another B10 3.3 (where do I get a similar car locally? afaik mine's the only one, and if I were to find a suitable car i'd still need an EEPROM reader/writer), but even then I would still need to visit the dealer to get the cluster recoded to sync the correct mileage to the cluster (stored in the ECU and the cluster apparently, they have to match up) to prevent the mileage tamper-dot warning appearing.  Rather naively I thought that JC might have dealer-level programming kit as new clusters must arrive and be programmed (they did recode it, but it didn't help).  If it did require a new cluster (which they said will cure the problem, a "black box" solution), and other people have had similar issues which required replacement, an independent may not have the required access for sourcing alpina parts, and JC, being an alpina dealer, seemed the only, if most expensive, choice.

back to the thread please (any replies on my cluster problem please direct to

http://www.bavarian-board.co.uk/forum_posts.asp?TID=45045&am p;am p;am p;PN=1&TPN=1&get=last#417847 ), sorry for the hijack Pete
