Hello

I have 1986 728i auto The OBC needs re-setting every time I use the car. I can get hold of an OBC from 1983 735, will it work?

Nigel

does it go off completely when the ignition is off? If so you
have a power supply problem and not an OBC issue.

Thanks, I think the  batteries need changing and may be the reason the break check light  comes on and there is nothing wrong.

Where would be the best place to this done, electrical/tv engineers?

check the inline fuse first, you may have an issue with poor
connections etc? And also run a check over all the fuses as
they do suffer. But I'm not a 100% sure the OBC has batteries
as it takes its cues from the sensors and the dash assembly.
The only batteris present are the ones in the pcb in the back
of the dash. Do all the instruments etc work as they should?

As for the brake light check illuminating, try changing both the
bulbs, as someone before you may have put replacement
bulbs in that may not be using the correct current etc, and
this can show as a blown bulb when there in fact is nothing
wrong.

I believe there 2 AA type rechargable batteries behind speedo/rev counter, I think they will have to be re-newed. I assume the instrument panel is similar to E28.  The instuments work ok, the fuel never shows more than 1/2 full, but have never filled the tank to the brim as this  requires a bank loan.

When I start the car the OBC reads --- and two letters, too damn cold to check, push out side temperatute button and it works. I did start the engine with both rear lights removed for minor body repairs.   Break check lights  come on and push the break pedal and it goes out, nothing wrong with rear lights and has the correct bulbs

Will check all fuses etc, thanks.

have you set the OBC at anytime in your ownership? As that's the default mode upon reconnecting the power
supply you're describing.

It is more or less identical to the e28, but yes the only
batteries present are behind the dash, you'll have to get
some new rechargeable items and have them put back in
BUT if the dash all works as it should then they're not at
fault.

The brake check light will always illuminate when the
ignition is on until the brake pedal is pressed, and should
only come on after that if there is a fault, does it come on
any other time? If not then that's fine.

Thanks, It looks like I will have to reset the OBC with the instruction book," If all else fails read the --"   It's too damn cold in the garage at present. E23 is only a toy, not an every day car.

Have found a good set of alloy wheels with 195 /70/14 tyres, I got the car with 205/70 and it appears to be a little over geared, its only a 2.8 version.
