Hello Dbanbery,

I've got a e28 528i SE. Fantastic car no problems at all really to keep. If i drive like a Max Flower Kiddie boy racer i get about 15 mpg, if i drive like a nun i see 30mpg+.

Go on get an old five.

Autos are easy. Its the steering thats hard.

The most common places for rust (not that mine has any ) are on the rear bumper and at the bottom of the doors. Watch out for dodgy brakes and leaking power steering pipes.

Jeez, you don't see many as clean as that. In fact, you don't see ANY as clean as that. They've just become worthless old bangers now, sadly. I bought a D reg 525e auto as a winter car for £35 2 months ago as an unwanted trade in. Did the cambelt and changed the oil, she just smokes along now, 217'000 miles and all. Comfy old barge, love 'em.
I paid more for the 840Ci's brake pads than I did for the E28. In fact, I paid more for my shoes. Madness!

I have a 1985 535i and I don't think that it has been particularly well looked after (at leastnot for the last few years). The only rust was on the jacking points where I have just had to have £75 of welding for the MOT. Other than that the body is really good.

Edited to add - they are very old so there is a good chance that suspension bushes, shocks, etc may well need replacing if they haven't already been, and check all electrics as they can be dodgy too.

Mike
