On older bmws castor is adjustable by changing/rotating the top mount, but not sure about E60s.
Personally I'd want to know what was broken/bent before I went on to compensate by adjusting something else... Could your shock be bent I wonder? |

Invoking this one year old thread now. Last one year has been very difficult to me partially because of being jobless and then stress of getting into a new job with all sort of learnings. Now all well and going good so back to the problem yes, I still have this banking to the left problem which is not that bad but kind of annoying; I have not driven enough in past one year so not bothered that much but now I am looking for Europe trip in the Easter break so worth getting it fixed in time. I was reading set back problem here here and mine could be either caster issue or set back problem. Hard to find out. Caster is not adjustable in the E60. I will take this to a local mechanic to have a look this weekend possibly (or next if not this weekend) and get his opinion on this. My problem is I don't know what to replace or repair as per last check made by alignment guy who compared everything with the right hand side wheel and didn't find anything bent or broken. refer to wheel alignment printout I posted in the last page. I am completely clueless. Edited by afsar |

Today I took it to a bodyshop and they asked me to get
impacted wheel arms replaced. I asked him to do it and since then it is looking all good. He said no need to get wheel alignment done for this reason atleast as this has nothing to do with the alignment. Car is tracking straight now. I am happy man. |

Great!
Btw your mechanic was wrong when he said that only brake discs can cause the shimmy that you had. Many a garage will tell you that bushes and arms can't cause a shimmy under braking - but it's rubbish! |

Yes he definitely was wrong; his half baked theories made
me waste my money on new bearing whereas I should have replaced full leg with the arms. Now 50-60mph shimmy is gone too. |

Depending on which arms were replaced a wheel alignment IS required on an E60. Do you know which arms were replaced? The front 'tension' arms do not need an alignment after being replaced. These arms or rather the bushes in them at the inboard ends are usually the culprits for a shimy under braking. Under braking these arms and the their bushes are loaded in a different direction from the norm so if worn you feel a bit of vibration thru the steering wheel as the bushes squirm about under the braking loads. From what you've said it sounds like it was these arms that were replaced. The rear arms require a full four wheel alignment after replacement. Edited by Andrew Rolland |

From the pic above part #11 (LEFT tension strut WITH RUBBER MOUNTING) and #16 (Right wishbone) were replaced. I alignment guy told me that considering the UK road condition specially London's your car will need alignment "every month" Everymonth is a bit too much given the guy was representing an alignment company but it needs alignment atleast quarterly IMO.

If part#16 was replaced then you should have got an alignment done. I will double check TIS. Part #11 does not need an alignment done. I got a wheel alignment done in Feb following works from my MOT and the alignment was out after only 1 year driving on pothole filled roads since it was previously done in Dec 2009. The bushes that were replaced will eliminate the shimmy under braking. |

Checked TIS. You do need a wheel alignment done if part #16 was replaced. |
