not me I'm afraid!  I thought there were only cosmetic changes (eg, steering wheel).

Didn't know that there was two versions of M-tech.

M-tech gives you sports suspension (lowered by 15 mm on the E60), sports body kit and a sports steering wheel.  However you could specify any of these as an individual option.  I have an SE with the sports supension and a sports steering wheel but with the standard body kit.

Is it an E39 or an E60 in 2003?

its an e39,the reason i'm asking is that my car was fitted with sports suspension from the off,now i need to replace the shocks and i see a set of shocks for sale on ebay, these according to their part numbers are sport suspension mark 2 suited to an e39 my car is fitted with the mark 1 version,i assume there are some differences but will they fit and if so what will change suspension wise,lower/higher/stiffer/softer etc

I would have thought that when Mark 1 and Mark 2 references are made in terms of vehicles it would be an age related thing.

The E39 had one facelift (in 2000?) so I would guess that your E39 would have a Mark 2 set up but you have Mark 1.  I'm puzzled, but then again I've never heard of a difference in M-tech suspension.

Are they BMW parts?

I'd just give motormec or someone a call and see what they know.

Ahhhh

Looking here there is indeed two versions of shocker available.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=DT12&mospi d=47538&btnr=31_0255&hg=31&fg=10

This is depending on what option was specified when the car was ordered.  Go to a BMW dealer give them your chassis number and ask them to print out the options list. This will give you the option numbers and from that you will see if you have Sports Suspension option S704A or S705A.

Will need to check mine out. Hmm interesting.

Very interesting.

If you know you have S704A you know what part number you need so you can check out the correct parts when buying.

I've checked mine out, according to my options list I have option S226A which is sport suspension fitted to a SE model.  On www.realoem.com what I have is referred to as "For vehicles fitted with Sport suspension settings" rather than M Sports Suspension which would have been option S704A.

I didn't realise that there was a difference between Sports Suspension and Sports Suspension settings.

Everyday is a school day.  Let me know the outcome of your research.

Makes me think that finding the correct parts from a non BMW dealer will be difficult as there us a possible source of confusion over Sports Suspension and Sports Suspension settings.

well i turned up something on a site called bimmerfest, now according to a chap on there they are both the same....but... he seemes to base this on the fact that the "sway bar" which i'm guessing is the drop link fits in the same place in both cases,i dont know if this is relevant but he makes no reference to damping or spring length so it does'nt sound very conclusive.............more investigation needed i think...

540 sport suspensions (long)....There were 3 sport suspensions on the E39 5-series cars. The first was the original sport suspension designated "Low-slung Sport Suspension" N704A and was offered only from 7/96 thru 9/98 production. The second designated "M Sport Suspension" S704A uses the same hardware but a re-mapped spring table to accomodate the increased base weight of the M62TU (Vanos) cars from 9/98 on. The third designated "M Sport Suspension II" S705A is a stiffer set-up and uses the same shocks and springs as the M5. It is specifically designed for a staggered wheel set-up and was first offered in Europe from 9/99. Unfortunately the S705A suspension was not offered in North America until 9/02 (2003 model year).

this seems more convincing..........forgive my ignorance but would i be right in assuming that a staggered wheel set up is wider back wheels than front and if this is the case would a 520i really have this set up,seems a bit ott considering the engine capacity, and seemingly it must apply to this car as the suspension(s705a) is listed on real oem as an option.....or am i talking nonsense?.......
