Trailer Bearing Service

Has anyone got any suggestions on how to service conventional roller bearing races that are on my small trailer with an Alko 500kg rated axle?

I have detected a slight rock on the bearing when grasping the trailer wheel at the 9 and 3 o'clock positions.

The bearings are retained by a castleated nut which is then retained by a split pin just like the front wheel bearings on rear wheel drive cars from the 1970's and 1980's.

My question is, when you tighten up the castleated nut do you tighten it further to align the split pin or slacken to align the split pin?

Any thoughts?

I had an uncle who did that , many years ago on a Marina TC, the result was a sheared stub axle.

Ask someone at BSL or something similar, like these perhaps :

If you over tighten the nut then it will snap the stub but thats why you just give it a little nip. Done it loads of times as i work in a garage and never had a problem but  i have seen ppl use a windy gun or power bar on them and as you said it snaps the stub as it get hot and makes it weak
