Just wondering, car failed the MOT this morning for a broken front spring, just wondering would an E39 front spring be the same, I have one in the garage that was removed from an E39 as the shock was hammered...

Any info would be very helpful

I have an E38 728i as my day car. It has managed to break three front springs in just under two and a half years, the last one breaking exactly on the second aniversary of its replacement. BMW said that if I let them change it if they found a fault they would replace it for free, but would charge me for the work at £120 per hour. Minimum 1.5 hours.
I bought a new spring for £90 and RTS Motors of Huddersfield did the job for £40 all in.

I have driven over 400,000 miles int he last 15 years or so driving E32 and E38 cars. None of the others ever broke a spring. I know the roads are worse now than they were, but not so bad that the springs should break so regularly. It has cost me over £800 in repairs and parts (new tyres and linkages). Today the spring broke and wrapped itself around the steering wrecking the lot . And I was only travelling at 12 mph having just left a junction to my destination some 50 yards past it.

Are BMW getting their springs made in China I wonder? If you have had a broken spring or break one in the next year, please PM me to advise.

What's the name of that BMW Dealer?  Dick Turpin per chance?

That's outrageous.  Local Glasgow BMW dealer is not even half that per hour.

Eurocar parts might be worth a punt for a spring.  When I had a rear spring break on my old Senator, Vauxhall wanted £250 + VAT for a pair (they only sold two at a time which is no bad thing as you should really replace springs in pairs to get consistient ride height), I went to Partco and got 1 spring for less than £30.

That's seriously heavy bags.

We really shouldn't complain up here on the correct side of the border, we have it way better than you boys down south.
