bmw 1 series timing chain problem

   Hi , 

i got a new BMW 116 Es in July 2007. everything seemed fine until may 2009 when the car just decided not to start.
It went to BMW main dealer under warranty and they said it was the Sensor on the cam shaft and he chain tensioner. both these were replaced by them.
just over a year later the car wouldnt start again and had no warning lights and had been running ok.
BMW dealers have said the timing chain has snapped and damaged the cylinder heads. 
they say it all needs stripping down and replacing at a cost of �4000, bmw have offered to poay 75 % as it is out of warranty.
does anyone know if the previous work and the new problems are connected at all.

	Hi and welcome to the forum I've never come across a BMW timing chain snapping. I'm guessing by the fact that BMW are offering to pay such a large chunk of the bill is down to the fact that it is so rare and they are possibly bricking it incase the new tensioner they fitted to a partially worn chain has increased the pressure on the chain and casued it to fail. Replacing bits of the timing chain tensioning system never fills me with confidence as the parts fitted on day 1 will then all wear that the same rate. A new part with no wear will be harsher on the parts that have worn. Don't knock the good will gesture, they are few and far between. Might be worth speaking to BMW Customer Services too.

	The N45 engine is known for timing chain problems.
