Hi chaps. It's service time and there's a couple of things I want to sort that I need some info on. Firstly, I'm doing a full coolant drain & renewall so I want to know the best way to totally drain the system on my M60 engine and then refill and bleed! Secondly, I want to check/tighten the pump bolts as I am told they are prone to working loose. Can anyone tell me the correct tightening torque for them? Many thanks Mike |

Best way to drain the system would be to find your block drain plugs, bottom of radiator drain plugs (if either are fitted) and drain the system that way. Failing that remove the big radiator hoses from their fixings and do it that way. Fill it slowly is the trick with the ignition on to allow the heater valves to be set and fully open to hot. I filled my E39 via some of the hoses, removed at one end and poured the coolant in that way. I also filled it via the bleed screw points. If you PM me the last 7 digits of your chassis number I can look on TIS for the torque settings for ya. It won't be much I wouldn't have thoguht, 25 to 30Nm if that. Probably lower than most torque wrench settings, i.e. just nipped up with a ratchet and socket. Let us know how you get on. Andrew |

Mike Had a look on TIS, it doesn't give any torque settings for the water pump bolts. It does tell you to remove the crankshaft vibration damper from its hub (for removal of the pump, mibbie not required just for access) and these bolt torque wrench setting is 22 Nm. 6 or 8 number M8 bolts. Right, finally got around to the service 2 weeks later than planned. Andrew, my mistake, I spoke about coolant then a pump but what I didn't explain (which Hasso picked up on by the looks of it, good detective work there lol!) was I actually meant was oil pump bolts. I have read several reports that the bolts for the oil pump on the M60 engines can work loose after 100k or so. Anyway, after I dropped the sump, I discovered no less than 5!! yes 5!! of the oil pump bolts sitting in the bottom of the sump. There was also another quarter of the way out too. 3 of them had slightly damaged thread where they'd rattled and worked loose so I had to use a thread chaser on them to re-cut the thread then used loctite before screwing them back in. Didn't get time to do the coolant but the oil pump is now secure for some time to come hopefully! Sorry for the confusion but thanks for the replies. I totally forgot about TIS Andrew. I also have a TIS CD and could have found it out for myself! I will have a look on there for the bleed screws for when I do the coolant. I know where there is one but I'm sure there is another. I'll have a proper look when I get chance. Only managed the oil service for now but saved my engine so overall a sucessful day! Mike |

Mike, I had read your other post first before coming back to this one. Makes sense now. Glad it's sorted. You obviously have access to the right tools if you are re-threading etc. I take it was up on a ramp at a certain other manufacturers premises? |
