    Posted: 27-April-2011 at 14:19

Last summer my car kept stalling for a split second about a mile out from home.  No particular reason; not breaking, stopping, accelerating, cold weather, hot weather.  A local BMW mechanic tested the alternator and said that the power was fluctuating.  A squillion pounds later I had a new alternator.  The problem didn't go away and now the computer comes up with a "28DR" fault that two different mechanics have failed to clear.  The only thing I've found on the internet is that it might be a generator communication fault or something.  And yes, the damn car still stalls occasionally but usually after about 200 miles and then several times in fairly quick succession.

Any ideas?  I'm loathe to go to a dealership and pay another squillion pounds.

I'm afraid your only option may be to go to a main dealer or a BMW speciallist who has all the appropriate diagnostic equipment.

I've never heard of a 28DR fault before.

Entering an age of Austerity and now driving a Focus Diesel.

Oh dear!  Both mechanics have all the BMW diagnostic programmes on their computers but it doesn't seem to help.  Maybe if I get a bonus at work .....

I am a twit.  The fault is 28D7, not 28DR.

Anyone know that one?

Greetings.  A 318i (may it rust in hell).  It has cost me a fortune.  I thought BMWs went on for ever but this is 9 years old and has been a problem for 4 years now. Sorry.  It's driving me insane stalling all the time, even if it is for a second.  Particularly good uphill in the fast lane of the motorway.

These have what's called a BSD interface (communications line) between the Alternator and the DME. I'm assuming the fault relates to this.

As stated above - get it checked by a properly equipped Indy or go to a dealer. Also, if the alternator previously fitted was 'rebuilt' there may be an issue there. I've had many problems like that with Mercedes alternators.

Kind Regards,
Eddie.

You, Eddie, are a treasure.  Oh for the olden days when there was a lead loose or you needed wiggle the spark plugs.  The first alternator came with the car and the replacement was a genuine BMW part for a squillion pounds.  I shall bit the bullet and take it into the dealer or similar.

Many thanks

Jules
