Hi all! I found a gong under the r/h side lower dash panel. It's wired up but doesn't seem to make any noise. Any ideas about it's operation or how it's wired? My car is an 89 520iSE.

Yours,

Shaun

Hi Shaun, the gong is really only used for warnings. For example if you have an OBC or check control on your car then it will display the message and let you know by using the gong.

If you try and drive off with the hand brake up it should be a good test to see if its setup or alternatively take out one of the rear bulbs this should also kick it off when you turn the ignition on.

hope thats of some use.

I think the check control module is the only thing that can make the gong chime i.e. if the outside temperature is below 3 degrees C, one of your bulbs blows or if you leave your lights on and open the door with the ignition off. From what you have said before you don't have check control as you haven't got the additional display in your dash. I am guessing that the gong is fitted to all cars even if they don't have the module to drive it.

Just wondered what it was there for. I've had the car six months and haven't heard anything from the gong so it obviously doesn't do anything without the check control module. Thanks chaps!

Yours,

Shaun

Only cars with the digital clock and outside temperature reading or full OBC would give you the warning as the outside temperature sensor is not fitted to cars without the above.
