Hi all, i have recently become the owner of an 89 m635 highline. Although in good condition it does need a bit of tlc i am on with sorting the suspension at the moment and the next job is the dreaded timing chain. My car has done 140000 miles and i have searched high and low for a specalist to do this job and the only place i can find is Munich Legends. I have spoke to then on the phone and they seem like good guys but they reckon it will between £2500 to £3000 !!! to do the job, i have seen quite a lot said on the timing chain subject and munich legends and it seems that they do overcharge, £3000 seem excessive i was expecting about £1500 tops, there must be somebody else out there who is trained to work on these engines. On the other hand my engine makes no noises and has a full history so do i just leave it until it makes noise? any coments or recomendations for other garages who can do the work are welcome, thanks.

I have now been informed that my car may have been fitted with a dual timing chain from the factory as it was one of the last to roll of the production line.any truth in this?

Might be a duplex.

Part #1 looks like a single but part #34 looks like its a duplex.

If it is late car then quite likel;y to be a Duplex chain, whip the cam cover off and have a look to confirm.

Is there any chain rattle audible when the engine is running?

You should be able to hear chain rattle with the cover in place by using a screwdriver (mechanics stethoscope), put pointed end on the timing cover and then put your ear to the handle, just make sure it's not the other way round, it might be a bit sore that wayWink.  Plus you won't get the engine bay splashed with oil.

Remove the plug leads, by wiggling and pulling upwards, remove all the acorn nuts and lift cam cover upwards.

You should be able to see the chain on the front of the engine.

@ Andrew, I'm not suggesting he start the engine with the cam cover removed, but just remove the cover to see if it is fitted with a Simplex or Duplex chain, chain lash will be audible with the cam cover in place if he has any.

I did wonder if the question was how to identify a single/duplex chain or identifying chain noise/rattle when the engine is running.  I opted for the latter in my answer.

Don't laff at me but what would a BMW dealer quote you for a chain replacement?

Would be fully warrantied by the dealer on + side.

Well my mate worked at bmw as a paint sprayer and he reckons they would charge £120 per hour which is probably not far off munich legends!!! and i dont know if they would have the technicians who could do the job as it is quite an old car and they are just used to working on minis now!

BMW's recommended way of doing a chain job on these engines is to remove the cylinder head, so I could see their bill being scary to the extreme, it is possible to do it with head in situ.

Who have you had quotes from so far and are they removing the head?

I have only had a quote from munich legends, to be fair they did say they would be taking the head off and changing all the valve springs ect,but if it can be done without removing the head that will be better iam just trying to find out the best place to get it done at the moment as i am in the middle of replacing/restoring all the suspension/bodywork at the moment so it will probably be a job for next year.

There is list of specialists on Pistonheads, no real experience of any of these, heard of a few. A very fussy friend has used PMW Ltd in Chelmsford and would use them again, but does not run an M car.

I can give you the contact details of my inde, he deals with old and new BMW's in M cars but he is 200 odd miles from you if your in Leeds.

Let me know.

Sorry to come in late to this thread - I'm afraid I don't use this forum much these days.

The duplex chain (as seen on the E34 M5) appeared on the last few Euro M635's fitted with the optional catalytic convertor. I believe some made their way to Canada too.

The best place to get advice on cam chain replacement is the BigCoupe forum (www.bigcoupe.com). I run the E24 register for the BMW Car Club & two of our experts hang out there (Brucie & Ron.).

I can't swear to it but I do believe the head has to come off to do the job. While it's off it's best to take the opportunity to do a decoke etc.

It's recommended to change the the chain and sprockets every 100k miles. I take it you don't have any evidence showing yours were replaced? I would stay clear of the red line & avoid over-enthusiastic driving until it's sorted. M88 rebuilds don't come cheap.

I've heard that the duplex chain can be retrofitted but of course it won't be cheap either.

Thanks for the reply andy think i have found someone to do the chain now, an ex bmw master technician who worked back on the m635 back when they were new. As for enthusiastic driving i dont think that will be happening for a while as i seemed to have taken the entire front end to bits! after finding a small bit of rust i have bit the bullet and just decided to renew everything i find with a bit of rust or corrosion, i have become good friends with the bmw parts department! Although iam amazed with what you can still get for these cars, coming from a background of restoring capris i know ford didnt stock anything over 8 years old and they just didnt want to know when you asked about old parts/cars the complete oposite at bmw and the guys at the parts department just talk about how great cars they are. Thanks for your reply about the lenses as well i think they have been sprayed looking at them again although they do look very cool with my car being black and shadowline trim, i have managed to source some replacement lenses so think i will try these out. Hoping to put some pics up soon just been having issue with my camera but hope fully get some up on sun.
