I have an E46 M3 and that seems to lack urgency over 6000 rpm. Continies to rev Ok but does not seem to generate much more power;- Ideas

-- plug diagnostic in and read fault codes
-- stick it on a rolling road to see where the power drops off. |

If no fault codes are logged it could just be a drop off in performance from dirty/worn bits like spark plugs, fuel injectors, air flow sensor, engine breather hoses. None of these will drop a fault code if dirty until they get to a certain level but performance could be down by then.
One word of warning re-rolling roads. Your car is relatively sophisticated and will need to be 'told' that it is on a rolling road other wise the ECU will get confused when the rear wheels are doing 100mph with the front wheels doing 0mph and start to shut down/limit engine performance to 5,000 rpm or similar, not giving you a true figure.
