Any electrical experts out there?

The intermittent wipe on my 1990 318i (M40) does not work, also the wipers will not return to the "park" position - stopping at the exact moment they are turned off. I replaced the relay (GS&F - £25). Now, with the switch at the intermittent position the wipers operate continuously and will still not return to "park" when turned off. I suppose it is possible I bought a dodgy relay, but at £40 from BMW I cant afford to buy one only to find out the problem lies elsewhere.

Grateful for any help!

I have had the same problems on both of my E30's. Its in the intermittent mode when the wipers judder up the screen rather hastily right? Problems down to the tracks in the wiper motor which tell the system to provide power to the motor during the wiper cycle. Apparently you can take the motor out and clean up the tracks.

My advice? Don't bother with the cleaning or fitting a secondhand one. Spend the money and get a brand new Bosch sealed unit from Euro for around £65 + vat. Problem solved once and for all.

I have the same prob on my 320i i agree with rezaq on the retun track being faulty.Angry

Knowing the way they work it must be worth stripping old unit down and checking condition of track before spending £65+vat.

I will be removing mine on sunday (anyone know how to get at it. havent got me manual yet)

if the track is not burnt which you can check by cleaning away deposits with scotchbrite (the green stuf on the back of kitchen sponges)checking for cracks and arcs (black lunps)also check wiper is clean and free of arcs.

one final check if you have a multimeter check for conternuity  of the track by placing a piece of paper under the wiper to insulate it and checking from one end of the track to the other.(remove paper after check)

To test just plug back into loom and try.  good luk

I do intend to strip/inspect the motor before splashing out, I'll let you know how I get on. Not sure when, quite busy at the moment also MOT tomorrow - may have other priorities!

Thanks b318isp for your link.Clapping

mine all done works a treat Big Smile i had to do a bit more cleaning to get it all to work nice.

might be worth adding to your great site.

1,I had to remove corrosion from the 4-way plug on the motor,

2,I opened up the relay and with folded over wet & dry cleaned the relay contacts.

after doing this it was as smoothe as a babys bum.Drink

Write up is somewhere under intermittent wiper motor fix in the common faults section (or check the index).
