Best thing to do is go on-line and search for the same car and see what prices they are going for.  Autotrader, ebay, Pistonheads........

being very honest... any where between £850 & £2200 .. i own a fairly clean 1999 528i (M)Sport and price it around £2000-£2400 but i'd be lucky to see £1800 if i were to sell it, big engine car's are hard to shift at the moment :(  but that said folk are still running them as daily drivers (like me) ... there's something to be said about comfort & quality

depends on the general condition of mainly the running gear & body, the spec level & the right person coming along who know's what they want & whiling to be an honest buyer?

the 528i is still the best out of a bad bunch (big thirsty cars I am talking)
very good economy for that size of car IMHO and SILKY smooth engine which is almost indestructible.
E61 520d, slow and buzzy but my wallet likes the mpg.....

The E39 528i always got a good write up, they reckoned that it was the best balance of power and economy, less power and you'll get embarassed at the lights (happened to me one or twice in my 523iAngry) any more power (from the V8s) and it costs you a bit more.  Plus the V8 E39s had drop link steering to clear the bigger engine which supposidly resulted in a loss of steering 'feel'.

It is the classic BMW, smooth silky 6 pot engine, none of this 4 pot lumpyness with hairdryers like nowadays

Unless it overheats, after that the engine is only good for making 'tin' cans out of.
