Well after much head scratching I've solved the problem in the 520i, there was a parrot fitted when the car already had Bluetooth fitted, and the guy who fitted it connected the cd changer to a blank plug, so cd changer was trying to load but with no connection to the head unit obviously it couldn't. Once we sorted out the cd changer and removed the parrot the cars bluetooth seemed to kick into action and connected with the iPhone first attempt, so The guy who fitted the parrot (sunnyhill motors in Turriff) obviously doesn't have a clue what he's doing !!
