Hi,
I got the dreaded ABS/Parking brake/DSC lights problem recently and the garage I take my car to have said that the abs ring completely disintegrated when they tried to fix the sensor. They have put a new sensor in now, but removed the ring temporarily to avoid any bits breaking the new sensor. They haven't been able to track down anyone that can supply the ABS ring though - apparently my car is coming up as a German import originally rather than a UK car and there is a lot of confusion about what the actual part number is. They have contacted BMW and they say that they can't confirm the part number as it might have been superseded (probably run-around)... So only options they have are to order a new complete drive shaft from the dealers (over £400) just to get the bit off the end, or to find a 2nd hand one somewhere or someone who can supply an aftermarket suggestion that will work. Does anyone know if it's possible to get this from an aftermarket supplier? Also, anyone know if a 328 one would be the same part as the 330 one? My car is a 2000 330i e46 manual. Thanks, Derek |

Hi Cambell,
Thanks for that - I have been searching on ebay for a while but had only found this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-330I-3-SERIES-E46-1999-2005-3-0-DRIVESHAFT-DRIVER-REAR-AUTO-ABS-/150748221333?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item23194b4f95 which appears to be from an auto (not sure if it matters?) I would guess the ABS ring coems as part of the bearing assembly. It isn't shown on the Ebay part Cambell listed. Have you tried EuroCar Parts?

Hi Andrew,
I have tried ECP, but didn't have any luck finding it - they have abs sensors, but don't seem to list anything under abs ring, even though if you search for driveshaft it seems to be listed with it although it doesn't seem to be included - unless I'm reading it wrong! http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/BMW_3+Series_3.0_2000/p/car-parts/car-transmission/transmission-parts/driveshaft/?654114560&1&66c126a09b9b06f6beeea9200fe3cb1581779b84&000113 Derek |

That's strange I looked up a May 2000 made 330 and it says it's a 34mm diameter shaft and the year you've looked up is a 38mm?? What year did you look up Cambell?? Although I can't see there being and problem what size you use a 330i shaft.
Hope you get it sorted ok though. |

Ah, I didn't see the 2000 bit in the original post but to be honest, it shouldn't make a difference if there's a pair. I'd imagine the larger OD shaft would be an upgraded unit anyway.

Cheers Cambell. In the ebay pic I only saw the flange to diff connection which wasn't the ring, didn't notice that it is tucked in at the CV.
Larger driveshaft will be on the bigger engined stuff or ones with a higher diff ratio (increase in driving torque) higher ratio diffs may have been an option etc. When I changed the front wheel bearing on a Vauxhall 12 years ago, the ABS ring was part of the bearing hub. But then again a Vauxhall isn't a proper German car......

The ABS ring is part of the wheel bearing/Hub assembly on the front of all BMs, the rear is different due to the bearing being pressed inside the arm....
Good thinking on the diff ratio, although I would have thought the main change would have been between auto and manual cars, not sure if you can get an auto 330i though?? Edited by vpricey - 23-July-2012 at 20:34 |

Ah I see said the blind man, thanks for that Paul, you've just replaced a front bearing.....
You are right that the auto/man models have different diff ratios but there wouldn't necessarily be any more torque due to the gear ratios between a manual and an auto. By the time you factor in a different diff ratio it would have evened out by the time the torque gets to the driveshaft.
330i would have high torque but less than a 330d so the biggest driveshaft in theory should be on a 330d, but economies of production will mean differently, I would suspect...
