    Posted: 15-February-2013 at 20:59
I am about to purchase an E60 520D 2008 with fsh by main dealer and 57k miles. Reading another bmw info site I have been disturbed to read of numerous reports of timing chain failure for the E60 model.
I have searched for timing chain problems on this site and not found any, has anyone any useful help or information or should I avoid the purchase??
Thanks.

That engine is found in lots of BMW's 1'er, 3er's and 5'ers, the chain issue is a known issue on the N47 engine, there's a PuMA out on it, 'google' bmw N47 timing chain.

Complaint
Sound of friction drag on the engine from about 1500 rpm, which is visible from the inside.
The noise can be perceived in area of the gearbox housing and the oil pan.

Cause
Excessively sharp edges on the sprockets, the chain does not flow evenly over the guides.

Measures
We must distinguish two cases:

Case 1:

For engines N47, N47DKO, N47S, interval from 01.03.2007 to production 05.01.2009.

In case of customer complaint must change the following parts:
(See Annexes, Figures 1 to 7.) - Nov. 21 7803479 Sutitución the crankshaft bearings.

Caution: Use only crankshafts with a production date back to 5. 1. 1. 2009 2009
The production date is printed on crankshaft sprocket (see page 2 of the Annex)

Meaning of the figures:
The first two indicate the assembly line.
The 6 following year (two digits), month, day.
Last 5 indicate the reference number of the crankshaft.
Thus, the crankshaft shown on page 2 of the annex was built on October 21, 2009.

11 31 8 506 652 Timing Chain bottom.
13 52 7 797 906 sprocket for driving the high pressure pump.
11 27 7 800 523 sprocket (intermediate for balance shafts).
11 8,510,014 31 Supply Chain superior.
-11 7,797,899 31 Timing Chain Guide above.
-13 7,797,904 52 Timing Chain Guide below.

Note: Adjusting the intermediate gear shafts accurately balanced according to workshop manual. In case this intermediate sprocket and the balance shafts are not sufficiently fit, the motor can still giving rise to noise despite the new crankshaft.

See November 21 workshop manual 500 "crankshaft replacement."

Note: In the case of vehicles to which a previous repair and they replaced the crankshaft:
Proceed with these vehicles as detailed in "Case 2".

Case 2:

N47 engine, N47DKO, N47S, N47T production interval 05.01.2009 - 01.03.2011

In case of customer complaint replace the following parts:
(See Appendix, Art 8 to 10)
-11 8,506,652 31 Supply Chain bottom.
- 13 52 7 797 906 sprocket high pressure pump.
- 11 31 8 510 014 Supply Chain superior.
-11 7,797,899 31 Timing Chain Guide above.
-13 7,797,904 52 Timing Chain Guide below.

Note: There is no need to release the binding thread of the intermediate toothed wheel balancer shafts.

Note: As of March 2011 there are new guidelines. These guidelines do not bring reinforcing ribs.

(See Appendix, pp. 7 and 10.)
In this way the inner surface of the guides is smooth throughout its length and the timing chain runs easily on them.
They have not changed the references.

Note: During the repair make sure guides are mounted without lateral veins (in the Annex, Art 7 and 10.)

Attention:
No repairs are allowed in vehicles with production date after 03/2011 and vehicles in which all existing measures have already been made. The sound now is the moment, the normal state of this world! No risk of broken chain!

Not allowed engine change because of this claim!

Buy it and get a BMW insured warranty on it before it hits 60K miles, pay by monthly DD to price protect yourself and the best bit from speaking to BMW IW the other day is that their policy on servicing has changed and you are no longer required to have the car serviced at BMW main dealers, just a VAT reg'd establishment that use the correct parts and fluids.

You can get warranty quotes from here or give them a call on 02806669204, usual business hours.

Many thanks for your very comprehensive reply. Because I was looking to purchase from a non franchised (although reputable) dealer I feel that this would always be a worry that it "might" happen at any time in the future and I am not willing to live with that and take the risk. Unfortunately I will have to decline the purchase based on the potential for this known problem. Again thank you for your input.

A vote for common sense, well done.LOL

Don't touch it with a barge pole, not because of the maintenance liability (fuel pumps can give bother also) but because in my opinion a 520d is a horrible car to drive.  Narrow availability of power makes driving a manual version very tiring on anything other than a motorway.  An auto would be slightly more acceptable.

It does return impressive mpg (47 mpg+) but I couldn't have lived with it for longer than I did.  Plus they come with poverty spec heating and ventilation controls unless original owner coughed up and specced it up a bit.

Buy a petrol six cylinder, that's what BMWs are meant to be.  Not wheezily DIEsels.

I'm not a fan of any diesel by the way.....Wink

I have now gracefully backed out of the purchase, which is a shame because I was looking to buy a "retirement" car that was to be kept and pampered and only subjected to about 6,000 miles a year. Although I do take your point about driving pleasure, been there done that and now £135 year road tax and a real world fuel figure of 40+ mpg seemed to be more of a priority (every one has different needs and these change!).
Also I would have had the benefit of business sat nav, full leather, auto box, soft close doors, electric steering column and many more toys.....I am gutted......

Having just bought a 520d in FULL knowledge about the above issue I can't see what the fuss is about.

The timing chain issue is affecting roughly 2>3% of engines (the largest volume engine BMW produce in fairness so the gross number of cases seems quite large, when in truth it isonly as said 2>3%

Balance that with the massive number of Nikasil engine cars that had issues.

I bought mine, a 2009 N47 car, am more than happy with real life everyday performance and the 55mpg that is going with it, have my eyes open a warranty in place in any case (I had one on my Diesel Vectra and never had cause to use it so it will more than likely be a massive waste of money :)
