Looks like I am having some broken wires in the tail gate loom.
Randomly get error messages of bulbs are not working (number plate light, rear fog light, reverse light) and the tail gate doesn't open using the handle button sometimes. Anybody takled this already? I know the E39 was suffering from similar. Not really nice to have this sort of trouble on a 56 plate car! |

Nearly a 7 year old car with the boot opening and closing every day.....soons adds up in terms of copper fatigue and wires part. Will be an easy enough fix if you can solder or can do a repair, but I imagine it will be under several layers of plastic trim that will be a pain in the sit down parts to remove. |

Do you really open/close the boot EVERY day?? I don't. The wiring repair isn't what bothers me. To FIND it! As you already mentioned, it will be buried under plastic and there will be a lot of broken clips.... And another concern, is it really a broken wire/s or just a CAN bus box somewhere playing up. I put my bag in the boot every day, it's just habit I suppose.
CAN Bus.....bluegh, BMW only or specialist to reset then.... I had the wifes Focus dashboard appart tonight to fix the heater fault, no heat when turning the dial. Looking failry scary staring into the innards of the dash, turned out it was a kink in the bowden cable where it connects to the heater dial control arm. Bit of manipulating with pliers and it was fine.

Repaired!!!
Took my car to ETA Motorsport (opposite Brands Hatch, they used to look after my M3) and Matt has sorted it. The cables in the hinge had breaks and he has sorted it all out for me, I am really happy. He also found a few other electric gremlins unrelated to the hinge problem. The bulb connector of the brake light bulb has some corrosion and that lead to a bad connection which over time has melted the metal prongs away in the light cluster! That explains the random "brake light failure" message I had even with the brake light working when I checked it. But I never took a buld out because it seemed to work. Simon, I just happened to be on a track day at Brands. But I usually drive the 60 miles from my place to ETA because I like the way they work. Always sorted my M3 out properly. |
