I am thinking about an X6, probably the V8, around 2008 - 2011 model.
Are there any obvious things I should be looking out for, known issues or problems? Thanks Daz |

It uses failry proven mechanicals so should be o.k. provided it has been maintained of course. The main known issue and problem with an X6 in Britain is more an image thing.........capable car though especially with a proper engine in it, the V8, and not a wheezily DIEsel!

Thanks, they look and feel solid. I was just not sure about their history, so thought I'd ask. The V8 says 5.0, what is the origin of that engine, is it a bored out version of the old 4.8? Or an entirely new beast?

I did think that it was a 4.8 V8 like you initially but it is the same engine as in the F10 550i which is a blown 4.4 V8, which is the updated E60 V8 engine, the N62.
Good anorak facts coming up about BMW V8s....
The M62 4.4 was the V8 in the E39 which has single vanos so only variable valve timing on one cam can't remember which. I have the N62 Engine 4.4 which has varibale valve timing on both the inlet and exhaust cams (dual vanos) and variable valve lift which acts as the throttle which BMW call valvetronic.
The proper engined X6 has a N63 4.4 V8 in it, which is similar to the N62 but has the inlet and outlet cams swapped over. In the N62 and M62 V8s the inlet manifold sits in the middle of the V as it does in most V8 engined cars thus the inlet cams are on the inside of the cylinder heads. The N63 has the exhaust manifold in the center of the V so the turbos sit in the middle of the V instead of the more usual inlet manifold sitting in the middle of the V. The N63 doesn't use the valvetronic principle in this engine due to the turbo chargers which makes the inlet a presurised air intake as opposed to the vacuum air intake in the N62, M62 and other non blown engines.
Make sure the car has history and a good maintenace record. The engine is new but then there is always a new engine for a new model but the rest of the kit on it will be from well proven stock. Look for frequent oil changes especially as the oil has to cool the bearings of two turbos.

Thanks Andrew. I bought a 2008/09 5.0 Twin Turbo V8, very happy with it.
Don't suppose there is a quick fix to remove the safety feature on the DVD/TV viewing when driving is there? It's stopping me watching the Burma special of Top Gear unless I am stuck in traffic. Cheers Daz |
