Hi There ,
I was just wondering what other 320i owners are getting in gas mileage in city driving? This is a manual gerabox. I only drive in the city, have many start and go, 5 km each way before shutting engine down, and I get around 7 - 8 km/l which is around 19.7 - 21.1 UK MPG, seems a bit low, but not sure though. I never drive with a heavy foot, spark plugs, o2 sensors, filters and all that could give bad fuel mileage as far as I read on the net are new, is my mileage normal? Thanks Mario |

Welcome to the forum.
My 525i is getting similar consumption in urban areas (with a heavy foot). However, a 5km journey is not much - your engine is barely warm before reaching your destination. This will always result in low consumption.

The 525i should be heavier than the e36 I suppose? So it should make sense that the e36 should get better economy, but not sure though. Yes I know I really drive short rides, the needle does reach operating temperature but not long after I shut it down |

What car and engine do you have? I suppose if its a bigger engine, it would consume more fuel? |

Its an E36 323. I would think a 320 would be getting low 20's just round the doors on short runs so you 21mpg would assume to be about right. Where do you get your fuel from? I try to stay away from supermarket fuel if i can. Edited by Beelailydude - 02-March-2014 at 16:38 |

Yeah I get 20 - 21 mpg. I buy fuel at the gas station, that's the only thing we have here, never heard of super market fuel though :) |

Your engine won't be getting hot enough if only driven that short distance and in slow traffic. Your engine probably never revs much more than 2000 - 2500 rpms and only for a short time. So doesn't sound too bad. What is your heater performance like, that is always a good indication of how hot the engine is.
If it makes you feel better......
I'm getting 22mpg average on mine at the moment doing a 6mile journey each way to the train station which involves about 1 mile at 30mph and then 5 at 60mph. Engine gets hot enough as the 60mph bit has twisty bits, a few roundabouts and give ways to slow you down to then speed up from.
Give me any length of M'way and it will get well into the thirties. I just don't do much motorway driving these days.
Would I change it to something less thirsty, I don't think so!

My heater works fine, and yes the engine barely heats up during the short journey. yeah I can reach 30 as well when in the highway, only problem is in the city, I guess because it's just too short of a ride :) |
