Last year I had a new roller shutter supplied and fitted by a duff outfit from Oldham. The second time that it was blown in by the wind, my 635 was standing behind it, as it blew back and forth in the 60MPH wind for an hour or so before I went to bed and heard the noise. I packed a set of tyres between the door and the car and went to bed again. Next morning my 635 was sitting on the tyres, wheels off the ground, and the shutter has wrecked the bumper. So I removed it - no easy task for a 71 year old, scabby head and wrecked hands, split the three parts and looked at the wreckage. Took the steel panel to a shot blasters and then to a body shop, and got it beaten back to shape and painted. Lovely job and half the cost of a re-conditioned on unpainted from BMW. Luckily the rubber strip, which was holed in three places from projecting bolts on the door bottom, was available from BMW for £130 or so. First one was rejected, but the second one came properly packed. It was time for assembly, but the alloy bumper had to have the lacquer stripped - took me a day and £20 of professional paint stripper. Then off for powder coating in clear lacquer, after polishing. Bill now £400!
But now I can assemble it - or can I? NO is the answer. Whatever I do, the rubber striip will not follow the line of the alluminium bumper, despite 9 fixings that theoretically should hold it tightly in place. For the last 9 inches at each end, the rubber has a gap of some 5 mm between it and the alloy, which looks a right mess as we Yorkshiremen say. Has anyone got a solution to this problem?
