On my way to a client this morning, both my ASC light and ABS light came on. I also lost the use of my speedometer.

After spending the day with the client, there were no warning lights showing when I returned. However, after a short drive towards home, I ended up waiting in a car park and after about 20 mins the feckers came back on.

Looking online, there are two likely causes: the left rear sensor or the ABS module. However, would the module failing cause the ASC and Speedo loss?

It's a June 2003 525i.

Also should a 06/2003 E39 not have DSC (the button says ASC!)?

I could do without looking into a module replacement especially after my #5 plug was forcefully ejected from the head last week (an hour after getting caught by a speed camera). One helicoil later and she is purring like new (except now she has more lights on than a Christmas tree)!

Yip change the left rear abs sensor.....BUT get a diagnostic done first just incase.    Remember, a new sensor doesn't need programming or anything, the car will recognise it and self correct the errors.

I changed both the front abs sensors on my E39.....5mm allen key, clean out the inside of the bolt head to allow the allen key to get a good fit, you don't want to damage the bolt head as it would be a pain to get out.  I scrapped out the allen key recess with a small screwdriver then gently tapped in the allen key bit with a hammer to ensure it was a good fit then unscrewed it.  As it is German the thread was in great nick with no rust, good quality bolts thank goodness!

E39 has ASC, E60 has DSC, DTC, ABS, PAS, EBD, ABC, 123 etc etc.

Thanks Andrew.
It is strange how the lights only come on after the car is left sitting for a while (~15 mins).

Anyhow, the cat went last Friday, presumably as a result of the previous issue (plug being forcibly ejected from the head).

Starting to look at my options.
Given the punitive tax system here, this also includes looking at tractors (tractor juice is cheaper also)!

But remember tractors need to be driven fast enough for far enough for the DPF to get hot enough. Short journeys over a few years (what did the previous owner drive a day) will be costly. Neighbours 5 year old A3 failed its recent MOT due to DPF failure (car does 6 miles a day to the train station and back) cost him four figures to fix! And that wasn't at main dealer either!!!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Looking around for some E60s but there is nothing of any quality. I can't help feeling that I should consider alternatives such a 3er - I even caught myself looking at a Passat CC in a dealers earlier.

Help!

I've looked at Passat CC also you get a lot of newer VW for the same money as a much older 5er! Only problem is they are all DIEsels and of course wrong wheel drive. Only decent Passat cc on the market is the 4motion 6 cylinder job but they are as common as rocking horse poo.

Fed up searching for a motor.
Tred a number of 2009-2011 cars but all low spec ("if sir looks, he will see this model is equipped with electric windows").
Thinking of a 2009 turf burner (the turf "sport").
Still, can't help thinking that they're looking for too much money for a 6 year old tractor!

Also looked at a passat cc last night. Meh!

DIEsels do hold their value because of the perceived lower running costs.  If I owned a 535d of the same vintage as mine, it would be worth 1.5 more than mine.

When I've looked I get depressed at what Petrol 5s are available, so you look at Petrol 3s but the search facility on BMWs AUC is not as easy to use as it once was to try and sort the wheat from the chaff.

Reading my Top Gear mag is also depressing, if its not a DIEsel then its a small city car with a 3 cylinder buzzy little engine up front powering the wrong wheels.  The only slight spark is the new Renault Twingo which is rear engined!  Couldn't bring myself to drive one .....I'll just keep fixing the E60 me thinks.

My logic in looking for a tractor is partly because I'm planning on moving to a bigger house shortly but also because of the cost of diesel Vs petrol here.
I know in the UK, diesel is more expensive but here it's currently about €1.45/l for petrol versus €1.35/l for diesel (noting that it has decreased by almost 10% recently).
Emissions also plays a part because since 2008 our motor tax (i.e. road tax) is based on CO2 which favours the oil burners over the petrol. My annual tax would drop from €1080 in the E39 525i to either ~€270 (manual) or ~€390 (auto).

Part of it is because most of my daily 20 mile commute is in very heavy motorway traffic/tailbacks and the constantly changing speed is giving me brutal mpg; at least in a tractor it will be marginally better.

WHAT!!! So 1 litre of unleaded only costs you £1.08????  Its more like £1.20 - £1.25 here at the moment.

I know you boys over there get screwed on the Petrol road tax.

You want an auto then for the traffic.  Save your left leg old bean.

I've arthritis or something so would prefer the autobox anyhow.

Oh, and apparently petrol prices are expected to fall further over the next month ifor OPEC fail to agree supplies - see http://www.independent.ie/life/motoring/car-news/petrol-prices-to-fall-ahead-of-opec-meeting-30778813.html
