Woot first post...

Ok have just bought a 92 318is with 140k on the clock for E3800. Its a great car in perfect nick inside and out.

Now ive been told that this car does not have a timing belt it has a chain which does not need to be changed like a regular belt. Now bearing in mind I have had a timing belt go in a different car Im kinda worried about the chain in my new one after 140k miles.

Does anybody have any opinions as to whether I should go have it changed and should I go to a dealer or backstreet mechanic??

Tks in advance.

Pop off the rocker cover and look at the cam sprockets for wear.

I have more info on my site (see my profile).

u have a 1992 318is coupe, and have experienced some noise from my timing chain, i took it to the dealers who wanted £737 to replace it, i have since found out that i should only replace the tensioner. the tensioner is about £40 from dealers

try getting a price from a independant garage, im sure someone on e36coupe.com was charger £400, which is not too bad, but i would try changing the tensioner first
