Now I'm agreat believer in putting in decent petrol in my car. I use Shell Unleaded with a tank full of VPower ever third tank or so.
Having used supermarket unleaded before (not in my E60) previously I got dreadful mpg and the car felt unresponsive so have avoided it for over 8 years. But now with getting 20 pence a litre off a month at Tesco, what about using their premium fuels? I haven't yet put supermarket fuel into my E60, the wife's Focus is currently running around with a tank of Tesco Super unleaded (or whatever it is called) and it appears that the engine is smoother.
Thoughts on using supermarket super unleaded?

I did find noticeable running difference with my TDi Discovery. Not so much mpg but smoothness.
Petrol ive found no difference and also use Tesco especially when the frugal wife gets 20p litre off last fuel i put in cost 95p litre. |

Thanks guys, I don't notice a difference in performance when using VPower but I do notice an improvement in mpg provided I haven't had to spend ages idling to defrost in the morning which is why when I last filled up and reset the trip I was resetting on 20.6 mpg. I'm in no way complaining about my cars thirst here, it's just the offers at Tesco are almost too good to be true! Besides buying beer and whisky at Tesco means The car can have a decent drink of something good too!
But the worry is, that Tesco will force all the Shell stations to close then they'll stop their offers and fuel prices rocket. The nearest Shell station to me shut because Tesco opened up nearby! |

I'm suprised at that John, usually DIEsels are more tolerant to imperfections in the fuel as it is thicker than Petrol. Could have been a bad batch of fuel or contaminants in the DIEsel tank at that particular filling station right enough.
I'll top up my tank with VPower before going in for the emissions test at Mondays MOT, fingers crossed!

My M3 and M5 only run on Tesco 99 super unleaded. The M5 gets the occasional tank of Shell or esso fuel if I'm short, but I've had no problems as Tesco is closest and usually pretty cheap too 😃👍

With the common rail systems on Diesels, they run at such a high pressure, anything up to 25000-30000 psi, the slightest bit of contamination can damage the injectors and a matter of a few hundred miles. Most filtration systems will filter fuel to around 2 microns, which if slightly contaminated fuel is used, isn't long in blocking the filters. I'd rather have to replace a £40 filter though than a set of injectors at £400 each. Years ago old Cat and Cummins engines would near enough run on water/ dirt

my young sister is an industrial chemist with BP in Grangemouth.....and she analyses fuel for industrial and commercial and consumers....difference between the octane outputs level is negligible according to her...so I done waste my time going for so called special high octane fuels...lol...( personal opinion ), other opinions may vary, and other fuels are available... hehehehe
