Hmmm, maybe Ashwell Garage's £1.07 per litre of 4* isn't so clever..... |

Yep, I pinch some from my mates garage that he runs his fork lift on, red diesel is mega cheap. To be honest for the amount I use to fill an old redex bottle as it happens I reckon a gallon of white would last a year at least. I got this tip of a mate who is into classic rallying, he reckons he's run several old nails on unleaded with a drop of diesel (AND I STRESS A DROP) without any problems. Like I say, mine seems fine on it, and the head has just been off and there were no apparent problems found with that either. When I start up I get a little bit of blue oil smoke which I think is the diesel in the system but when its warm its A1. |

Not quite, although standard Redex (intended for carburettor engines) does come as a bottle of red gloop... Think Big Vern's referring to agri-diesel... |

Is that the same as adding a bit of Redex?

I run my 1983 635 on Unleaded but I keep a small bottle of red diesel in the boot and add a drop at each fill up.Doesnt seem to do any harm and runs fine on unleaded. Edited by Big Vern |

Just spotted that the Tesco at Weston Favell in Northampton still sells genuine 4 Star. Surprised me as it's only 76.9p a litre.

Hi Colin, Why don't you give Barney a call at Munich Legends on 01825 740456. He should be able to put your mind at rest. Alternatively you can call Fritz Bits who are another 6 specialist who should also be able to stop you loosing sleep about the unleaded/leaded problem on 01823 669425. You must post a picture of your car. In my opinion the Chrome bumpers are the prettiest and being about 200kg's lighter they are quicker and better on fuel. Hope this helps. James

The plot thickens, Sure have a chrome bumper 6. everything suggests it should be ok, however going to BMW today to extract the correct wording in their magic book of tecono and I shall post it on site to see what everybody feels about it, thanks for all your help so far cf |

87 cars where cat ready engines and will definantly be ok with unleaded. The engine is no higher in compression as far as i am aware, and the only difference is that the ECU is Motronic allowing a computer to be plugged in for diagnosing problems and also it will aid the car in rolling road tuning. It sounds to me that you must have an early highline rather than chrome bumper model.

Cheer all. BMW were reading from the text book after I had given the chassis number and it clearly stated all 86 to jan 87 were ok, However due to the higher compression in Feb 87 onwards unleaded would do the engine no good at all. Yeh you guessed it mine was built in Feb 87, still I'll give it a go and thanks for your ideas cf |

I have spoken with about 5 different specialist regarding the leaded/unleaded fuel issue and have been given the same advice by all. Basically if your car has done more than about 60k on Leaded then there will be anough lead on the internals to protect them. Furthermore i have been told that despite what they claim all BMW's post 82 will be fine. The only cars that won't work as well will be the CSL's and O2's. I have an 86 635csi and have been on unleaded for 4 years and have covered 20k in this time with no problems.

Colin Is it possible to get upgraded valve seats like people do on the MG's ? I think I remember something being said about some petrol stations having to keep some supply going just for classic cars. There are people out there running classic Bentleys and Jaguars etc. If you dont get any answers on here, maybe looking at those kind of forums may help. |
