Hi all,

This is my first posting on the forum and have owned my 95 323 coupe for about 6 months.

I have an annoying problem with my passenger side window mechsanism.

When I raise the window in automatic mode (ie with the button pushed down once and then released) the window rises approximately 10cm and then automatically winds down again. The only way I can close the window is by keeping my finger on the button.

I think the window was replaced (badly) about a year ago due to an uninvited guest!

Is there a way of resetting the mechanism without the expense of taking it to a dealer / specialist??

Any help / advice greatly appreciated.

It might be the anit-trap mechanism whereby the mechanism thinks its hitting something on the way up. More likely its wear on the mechanism.

Never tried to fix this but can tell you I was quoted enough for the job by a specialist that I put up with holding the switch down.

Ewan,

Had a similar problem and was advised that the motors get "tired" and trigger the antitrap. Obviously any other resistance / obstructions don't help.

I replace the motor myself, and struggle to hang onto the window to trigger the antitrap, so if it is only stiff, there must be a LOT of resistance.

Changing the motor is fiddly, but within the capability of most although you do have to take the entire glass and mechanism out, and the motor will cost you approx £120.

Tony.

Hummm..

Ok, so not quite as straight forward as I initially thought!

It seems quite a lot of hassle and too much expense. I think I'll leave it and put up with having to hold the button down.

At least I now have a good idea what the problem is.

Thanks for your help.

I had exactly the same problem with mine for about 2 years until last week - now the window won't go down at all. I'm hoping it's going to be the switch or a bad connection.

Dodgy relay???? Also try putting silicone on the rubbers around the window. That will let it go up easier.

Both windows on the M3 do the same thing. Don't know whether it's resistance or tired motors. From the comments above I'm leaning toward the tired motor theory at present.

Regarding the suggestion of putting silicone on the rubbers; what form of silicone, and where should it be applied?

Thanks!

Ive had to adjust the replacement window on my coupe and it wasnt fun. The gaps were all over the place, it whistled like mad, and it hit the roof when closing! If the gaps and everything are ok on yours then leave well alone.

I found the binding problem to be a combination of the new window not being correctly adjusted and some lubrication being required.

By the way, if you disconnect the motor the anti trap switches off. As my motor was struggling to lift the window I disabled then re activated it by holding down the button for more than 5 secs. I think this also disables the 1 hit operation.

My window was binding on the leading edge, which is just a vertical rubber guide. I poured some motor oil down it and afer a bit of exercise it worked fine.

If anyone wants me to discuss what I went through to set up the window then post on the technical forum as I keep an eye on it.

 Tim
