The red light has appeared

I know this has been done to death and I'm sorry but I have loads of pad left (I've taken the wheels off and checked).

I'm 99.9% sure it's the rear sensor as it is all taped up. What I want to do is put the right connector on the wires from the dash and then put a new rear sensor on. I know I could remove the bulb in the dash or tape up the sensor but please humour an old man.

The only problem is I can't find the part no for the dash side of the connector. Can anybody help???

Hi Kevin,

If the light is red then it is not a pad light. They are always orange.

I doubt the connector is available. A trip to the breakers and a few mins with a soldering iron is called for here I think.

Alan.

Thanks Alan,

It is the pad wear light and it is red.

Cheers

Kevin

I agree, definitly a red light, got the same problem on mine.

For my education, why do you think its the rear sensor? I was told the same on mine but can't find a problem.

Do the 2 front sensors light the same light?

Tris,

As far as I know there are only two sensor's. One on the front left and the other on the right rear.

I disconnected the front one and the light still appeared but the back one is all taped up so I suspect it is that one. I'm not sure but if I can get the connector and fit a new sensor I could tell for sure.

The check the circuit, use a paperclip to short out the two connections at each wheel sensor. The light only comes on when the circuit is open (worn so that it breaks). Shorting the connector restores the circuit and the light should go off.

Opps...I had tested it incorrectly. I will retest the front again using the paperclip method.

I still would like to get the back one sorted so if anybody know the P/N of the plug the sensor connects to I would aprreciate it.

Cheers

Hi B318isp

A quick question

Do I need to short out both wheel sensors at the same time to check the complete circuit, ie are the sensors wired in series?

Cheers

The "Pad Wear " sensor should really be called the Sensor wear Sensor.  If one replaces the pads, but not the sensor (It's only a few quid more) then your sensor will be worn and making its contact thus lighting the dash.

On mine, the pads are all new, but the prev. owner didn't bother putting new sensors on, so I have a permanent light on the dash.  I will probably fix it at next brake pad change.

Unless you are sure of the status of any sensor, then yes you should ensure both are shorted to confirm the dash side of things. Connect back each sensor in turn to confirm which one is faulty.

Just a quick suggestion if anyone is trying to fix the same prob on their e36:

1)You have to switch the ignition on and off to get the light to go out as it only senses at start-up. This wasted loads of my time!

2) The wiring runs from the front Ns wheel to the rear Os in series, one ‘signal’ and one earth wire (yellow and brown I think), and the warning light only goes out when the system is earthed. Therefore if there is a break anywhere the light will remain on. Start at the front wheel, disconnect the plug and earth it. This will tell you if it the system is working properly and you can fault find from there. I had trouble ramming half a paper clip in my rear sensor but it went eventually…

Just been to the dealer to get a few bits ordered and they immediately found the car side connector, it's the same for the front and back so that is on order.

Good point Old Shape

The longer I own this car the more of a bandit I realise the previous owner was!

I'll take the pads out and double check the sensor itself as this may explain why the light comes and goes

Cheers everyone
