Whining Aircon E38 1999

When I have my aircon engaged there is a really irritating whine between 1000 and 2000 rpm. It sounds like an oil pump hetrodying if that means anything to anybody. 
I assume it's the most likely the aircon clutch (or the compressor ?).  Any other suggestions ?
