Unwanted alarm activation

   The standard BMW fit alarm I have on my 99 318ti Compact went off for no apparent reason at 2.30am last night.  I've only had the car a week so I don't know whether this was unusual or will turn out to be a regular occurence.
What sort of reputation do these alarms have?  Is there anything I can do to prevent this happening (apart from disarming it).
