I was recently in the Alps, and the V Spoke 63 wheels plus 9/10J X 19 tyres were useless on slippery roads. I must resolve this! Does anyone know the best combination of tyres/wheels to make the most of the traction control?

To my understanding the X5 comes with 'road' tyres. Get yourself a set off nice chunky off-road tyres. Maybe also come down a size to 18"? Keep the 19" for the summer and 18" for the inclement weather.

Thanks, Webdunk. I spent quite a bit of time trying to find the "perfect" solution. Chunky tyres don't always work on snow and ice. "Winter tyres" are quite smooth, but the rubber has multiple cuts to permit gripping on ice. The result is that they wear quickly at speed on the highway. For the X5 it seems that Michelin "Synchrone" offers "very good" performance on roads and snow, and "good" performance on "tracks". They make little claim for sand and mud, and zero for rocks. It looks too good to be true. I'm fitting 8.5X18" wheels and 255/55 R18 109H Synchrones tomorrow ( before I next tackle the Alps). Fingers crossed!
