Hi all,
I have just become the proud owner of an '85 635csi but drive it rather slowly as the Speedometer, Rev counter, Temp guage and MPG gauge
are not working. All the above dials do give a little 'flick' when the ignition is switched on and the Rev Counter and MPG gauge have shown signs of life. Can anyone give me some pointers on where to start the fault finding process or perhaps point to the a root cause. I am not able to trouble shoot the problem much further as amazon have not yet delivered any of the books I ordered

regards,
Ronan. Ireland.

Ronan,

It sounds like your Si board is up the spout. You either need to source a second hand one, cheapest. Get your old one fixed up by a specialist or knowledgable auto electrition who knows what they are doing (Recomended) or go to BMW and see if you can buy one (Most exspensive and maybe not available.)

Euro Car Parts can also sell you the correct SI board, if you give them your VIN no. They may need you to provide your old one in exchange...

Alternatively, it's Andy at Motormec +44 1502 500590 - hmm, maybe I should make this part of my sig details...

Before you replace the whole board, try fitting new batteries. Take the board out - this involves removing the instrument cluster, taking the back off it and separating instruments from casing. It's not as difficult as it sounds - go here to find out how to get it out. The board is the circuit board underneath the fuel.temp gauges. The batteries that power it power the instruments as well. You can get replacements from Radio Shack, Maplin etc, and have them soldered in. If they've leaked, the board is probably beyond saving. You can use a s/h board from another E24 or one from an E28 5 or an E23 7 - just make sure you get a board from an auto car if yours is an auto and the same goes for manuals - the two aren't interchangable (tend to burn out for some reason.) This is the cheapest way of doing it.
Enjoy the car
Dan
