HI I have an E38 and have just upgraded the wheels to a nice set of 18" Style 32 radials. 235 front/255 rear. Trouble is, the car now drives REALLY badly! I have taken it into a tyre place to get the wheels and tyres checked/balanced and everything is ok but when I drive anything over 45mph the vibration is terrible. It also seems to 'wander' under braking. Any ideas?? I have been reading about hub-centric something or other!! Am i missing something?? |

the style 32's should have the correct hub bore (provided they are genuine alloys) for the e38 at a diameter of 74.1mm it is usually only an e32 that needs the hub rings with later wheels.
However as the vibration only came with the new wheels, try replacing one at a time with an old one and see if you can identify the side? then as a final resort try a balance on the car. |

Large wheels = bush problems.
45-50 MPH bucking bronco immitation is normal symtpom. It goes away at higher speeds.... best to get it sorted though. |

Hi,
It turns out that the wheels are from an E39, 5 series, and that has different sized hubs to the E38, 7 series. It wasn't a problem though, just bought some hubcentric spacers from a tyre dealer (had to wait 7 days for delivery as they came from BMW germany) and the problem was solved!! My next project is to fit a better exhaust but i don't want to spend too much. I want to be able to change the back so you can see the exhaust pipes as well. Any ideas???

I always thought that the E38 had the same hub diameter as the E39 but I just checked and it is 72.5mm...You learn something every day

I have a 1995 740i E38 and fitted the style32 18" alloys about 2 months ago and everything seems fine, I can thoroughly recommend them as they look so much better than the standard 16" as fitted from new Cheers Sean |

Hi Graham, Not a problem, if there is anything I can do to help. I have just done minor mods to my car like clear indicators front and sides, and crystalclear/red lights on the back, the rear lights look brilliant to me.
I could not work out how to get a photo on my signature, that is why I added the homepage link??
Any questions please ask |
