The car drives smoothly with no hiccups or flat spots. Mileage has just turned 68k.

A worn AFM or throttle pot. should show up on diagnostics???

-hmm, don't know for sure. If it throws the mixture out and you have an exhaust analyser connected, this will show it up. I think it is always best to test it properly, with a multimeter, to make sure; it is not difficult.

-incidentally, I am highly suspicious of your throttle pot; when the throttle is closed a switch takes the throttle pot out of the control loop altogether; thus tickover can be perfect, the car will pass its MOT etc but the fuelling can still be right up the spout.
