Hi Guys

On the E36 3 Series, if you press the odometer reset with the ignition switch off the mileage can be read. This is useful if you are looking at sales vehicles and the salesman has to go back to the 'office' to get the key. However, this mileage may not be genuine. (hence get out of jail stickers on speedo!) When the salesman brings the key, hold the odometer button in whilst turning the key to position 1 and hey presto the dashboard display goes mad!

The car has a Built In Test function which tests the instruments and also goes back to the car's computer processor (CPU) which retains the real mileage. Even if the speedo has been changed or the distance clocked, the CPU has counted the real mileage. Amaze the salesman when you find the car has done 20000 miles more than the clock!

Hmmmmmm, when u do that its not the mileage that comes up, theres several numbers that come up in sequence, the only one i recognised was the last 5 digits of my chassis number.

Can anyone else out there try doing this, press the odometer reset and then turning the ignition to position one.  Im curious to know what the other numbers are?!?!?!!?!?

Anyone got any ideas??

The no. displayed that looks like mileage are the last 5 digit of the vin no. I know because i crapped myself  until i realised what is was. Mind you it could be a good way to try and get some money off

The way to test it is :

1. see if the no. matches the vin plate visable through the windscreen.

2. Recorded the milage, go for a drive, then check again. You will find it is still the same, but maybe some cars have different functions.

also if i remember it also includes dash model codes, etc.

There is a link to this somewhere i will hunt it down.

Rory
