I saw a chum of mine today who owns a five-year old 318i saloon in which  he has so far driven 60000 miles. He does not set the road alight, or drive aggressively, but on the other hand he does not drive slowly.

-'So what?' you are all thinking. Well, he has done all of his 60000 miles on the SAME set of Michelin MXV tyres.

 Wow.

And they still have life left in them.

OK, I know these tyres grip as well as liquorice sticks in the wet, but I still think this is amazing.

Can anyone top this in a BMW?? I don't know of any sets that have gone past 40K on a BMW.

No Brucey, its not a record.

A record is a (normally) circular piece of vinyl with a grove in it.

I'll get me coat !!

Best Wishes

Michelin metric tyres are also quite long-lived.

Currently, I only have ONE Michelin 220/55 VR390 fitted (on my nearside front), but have had it there for years. Only now is it going bald. It has outlasted Avons fitted on the other three wheels.

I snapped up a replacement pair of Michelins from e-Bay for Ł12.50 each, both of which will now go on my Six's front wheels. Let's see how long those will last....

I had the same tyres on the back of a Vectra and got nearly 70k out them. They still had a good thread left, but one of them had a wire failure in the side wall causing it to bulge.

60k for a BMW is amazing. I think he needs a Corolla not a BMW!

If you get more than 20k out of a set of tyres you're not driving the car right! biggrin

Or very fast!

You gotta watch that the tyres aren't perished as if they have been on for a few years the mud and cack that gets in them, makes them go brittle and crack.

These days tyres are lasting much less distance than they used to. Probably because of the better handling and grip levels the new cars offer.

Tread patterns are becoming very clever but compounds and such like makes them grip well but not last long.

-Michelins seem quite perish resistant in my experience.

-One of my uncles bought a nice Austin 1100 for my aunt in 1968, which covered 40000 miles on the same tyres, eventually.... The tyres (Michelin X or ZX I think) eventually perished and failed the MOT  at which point they were over 20 years old, and were about 2/3rds worn. The car is now a classic- 1 owner, unrestored etc.

cheers

Nice.

But then we are talking 20 year old tyre technology!

The michelins on my dads classic were 25 years old and original and the cars had done 50k. the car in question is a 150+mph car and has been around the ring before now on the aformentioned tyres. We replaced them with some much newer Pirellies and these were schredding bits of rubber off them after about 1000 miles. We are now on the lookout for some original Michelins MVX tyres on a 195/70/vr14.
