As you plan to keep the car for a while, I would be inclined to give a 5w-40 full syntehtic a go. look at a good one like Motul, Silkolene and fuchs. Look to do oil changes every 8k or once a year which ever comes first. Cheers Simon. |

Hi Simon,
my 2002 build E65 645i is coming towards the end of its warranty. Could you provide options/recommendations for this car please as I'll probably self service when the warranty is out. Thx Dom |

Dom, According to my book, you will need a BMW LL01 spec oil. Plenty to look at on my site here http://www.opieoils.co.uk Cheers Simon. |

Hi, For the 728i you can use a good 5w-40 BMW approved full synthetic and change every 10,000 miles. If the oil chages are on variable serving then look at a BMW LL01 spec oil. Have a look at Motul, Fuchs, Asmoil and Castrol. Cheers Simon.

And what would you call a 'good' 5w-40?
Thanks, X-RAY |

Variable servicing is when you change the oil when the onboard computer tells you it needs a service. Good 5w-40 would be Fuchs, Mobil, Amsoil, Castrol, Motul. Cheers Simon. |

Simon. Can you give me an opinion on this stuff please ? http://www.advanced-driving.co.uk/bb/viewtopic.php?p=2355#23 55 Sorry if its already been covered, but I'm a moderator on that site, and don't want to see anyone damaging their engine ( which would have been the result of the last stuff I asked you about). If you wish to reply directly on that site, feel free, if you want to offer your products on that site, I'll run it past the owner, giving you my blessings of course. Many thanks in advance. |

Best Wishes

Nigel, Without looking at it in m0re detail, and having it tested its hard to know what it is. On the face of it,it looks like that Ametech engine restore or similar. There is a few of these type things coming over from OZ at the moment, we have some of them on test but not this one. My advice remains the same, if you use quality oil then there is no need for additives. Cheers Simon. |

Hello again Simon,
BMW 728i, 1998, 2793cc, petrol, 98k. I'm a bit confused. Since you last replied to me I have since found out that, at the last oil change, the garage put in Q8 10W-40 semi-synthetic but you are recommending 5w-40 full synthetic. It's only for topping up purposes until the next service you understand. What to do, what to do? Thanks mate, X-Ray. |

Ok, If it is just for topping up then any semi synthetic 10w-40 off the shelf will be fine, should you do an oil change we would recomend a 5w-40 full synthetic as the quality option. Cheers Simon. |

I have a 92 535is and is now so confused about what oil to put in. Everyone is saying different, the yanks are saying 5W-30, 0W-40 etc and BMW says 10W-40.
Im thinking something like a 5W-30 as its done 190K but with top end performance rebuild. Its only my toy for the weekend. Oh, and any veiws of Comma oil? Please advise as already draining the oil, Cheers Edited by Jake Casson |

Hi, As the quality option a good BMW approved 5w-40 full synthetic, the cost option is the minimum spec 10w-40 semi as listed in the hand book. If the car is used hard then synthetic would be the best option. Cheers Simon. |

Simon, The oil specified for my Z1 gearbox as per the label on the side is BMW part No 81.22.9.407.305 and is described as a "special oil". Having enquired at my local dealer it is a fluid they don't stock or use but I can buy 60 litres for £250 + VAT - I need 1.25 litres!! The Owners' Manual refers to Mobil SHC 630. Do you stock a product that meets this specification and why is it special? Regards STEPHEN B |

Stephen, If you can find out the spec and especially the viscosity from your Dealer I'm sure we can supply a matched product from our range. I'm looking into the specs of SHC 630 Cheers Simon

Stephen, Success! The Mobil ‘SHC’ ‘Synthetic Hydro Carbon’ oils are high VI EP gear oils based on PAO synthetics. The 630 is SAE 140, 80w-140 or 75w-140 grade in gear oil viscosity. We have two that match the spec: Castrol SAF-XJ 75w-140 Motul Gear FF 75w-140 Regards Simon
