Hi, i purchased a 740 a couple of months ago and i wondered if anyone has experienced the same problem as i have. After driving it for about 20to30 miles everything is fine, then gradualy you start to hear a faint klunk which becomes worse and constant no matter what position you steer l/r straight it is still there untill you leave the car for example 30 min and its silent again! Obviosly heat related. I have had the car checked at my local bmw garage (preston hall stocton ) and they could not find anything wrong apart from the brake pads not being genuine, so i told them to replace them but it still has not solved the problem prior to that they changed the track control arm and another ball joint on that side, hopefully someone might have experienced the same and could point me in the right direction as this is spoiling my enjoyment of a great car, thanks.

Hi M8,

The only thing similar to this was one I had a few days ago that only happened after you drove it for a while turned out to be front shock absorbers!! it was a very faint clonk more so over speed bumps. It usually occurs on vehicles with quite high mileage 70,000+

 Only a suggestion!!

Hiya

I have a 144k 728i which has just started to do the same but on the os/f

all is fine until around 20+miles and stop start traffic and it seems to be worse on very hot days. if i leave the car for 30 mins all goes silent for a while then it comes on again after a simlar covered distance   my bmw specialist tells me there is no play in any of the joints and that it could be the shocker. the knocks and groans do get very loud the longer you drive.

Anyone else had this problem ? if so what's the cure?  i'm sure it's heat related

Many thanks Andy

Hi, I have an E38 and I have the same problem, in a straight line no knocking/clunking, but in city/town traffic with stop/start it gets worse with heat. Dont know what it is but as you say it can spoil a superb car. If anyone knows a solution please help

Cheers

Sean

I have cured my knocking noise on the n/s/f

I replaced the shockabsorber and all is now silent

Talking to a bmw specialist he told me that E38's can be heavy on shockabsorbers due to the weight of the car but only on higher mileage cars.

Replacing the shockabsorber has cured the problem

Genuine front shocks are around £115 each of which are made by Sachs.

You can get aftermarket ones i.e Monroe/Sachs etc for a little less

I have a similar prob on 750 il, but some days its fine, and others knocks like a beatch.

it has the s edc hydraulics fitted, could this still be shocks, or does my baby just have pissed off days

here's hoping

the front anti roll bars could be the cause and are easier and much cheaper than changing shockers, maybe worth a try first.

Thanks jetone, i have had a quote for a new one which is slightly more expensive than yours as your car maybe does'nt have EDC its a massive £438 plus delivery! ouch. maybe i can disconect the EDC and fit the £115 ones? what do you think.

My car is a 99 s plate 728i without EDC

I'm not sure if you can disconect EDC and fit standard shocks you would have to ask a bmw specialist.
