Hello Im new to bmws and was considering a 525 se around 1994 model, it is either that or the 520 se of the same age. What MPG should I expect from both models?

From my 1994 525i se I am getting around 375 miles to a tank of fuel (£55) and most of those miles would be short journeys obviously slightly more on a run but not a great deal.

The 525 is a good car but parts are more expensive than the 520,and be aware of metric size tyres (standard to the 525i could even be to all 5 series) very costly £140 each as Dunlop are the only manufacturer of the tyre. Although I did read that Michelin have started to make metric sizes.

I've an 89 525i, it does about 22 around town, and just over 30 on a run, and this is with 196,000 on the clock.

As far as parts go I dont think there is much difference, although mine does have the M20 (12 valve) engine.

I've found it a delight to run and own, and only wish I had found the marque earlier.

One big difference you will notice between the 20, and 25, is the extra 42 bhp of the 25 does make it much torquier, my brother has the 24 valve 20, and it does need revving more than my 25, although the 192 bhp does make it a bit dearer to insure.

All this for £800, lovely car, good luck if you decide to buy one

Best Wishes

Nigel

Wow, i'm really impressed with that economy! I'm looking for a early 90's 525i SE to replace my Merc 260E. The Merc only gets around 20mpg average.

You wont have any trouble finding one, there are thousands of them out there.

There was a nice 520 advertised on the club website, it may have gone now, it was a bit expensive but only had about 30k on the clock.

Best Wishes

May I also suggest www.e-bay.co.uk Check out the location of the car and view it first if you can.  Also, cross-reference the autotrader advert prices with the auction prices since people seem to end up paying silly money on e-bay, but it can also offer a bargain.  Especially if you're in an area where not too many people would want to drive to.  I obtained my car via e-bay, a fair few hundred pounds below the local ads.  Drove 150 mile round trip, only about £50.00 in petrol though.

Good luck
