I made a big mistake already, it turns out the auction on ebay.de was for Two HID Bulbs and the connecting cables but no Ballast/Ignitors Its an extra £100 for those.

I received the Angel eye kit this morning and couldn't resist installing one of the Rings in the new Headlamp inserts.

I don't mind being a guinea pig The Angel Eye kit arrived this morning, hopefully it will be easy to fit as the rings are flexible.

Flash you are probably better off waiting until Miles has received his kit and can confirm to us that all is present and correct before sending more people off to make the same mistake if its the wrong kit or doesn't fit.

I am not trying to use Miles as a guinea pig or anything but the best way for everyone to be happy is to hang 5 and see if the things others are buying are the right items.

Like with the Angel eyes we know whats needed in purchasing and fitting them and that for the best results they need a little work (thanks to Andy for this).

The HID's have got a bit cheaper over the last few months. Looking back the Bohmen 6K H1 was $460 15 months ago (Yikes)

and the Depo kit was £200, plus post and VAT.

The Hella Angel eye kits were around £100 and comprise 4 plastic rings with a socket arrangement on the ends. A plastic block then plugs into this which has a fibre optic cable. There are 4 fibre optic plugs for the rings, the other end has a polished face with a metal surround. This was designed to plug into the back of the lamp assy on the BMW headlamps and was then illuminated by a filament bulb (one per side of the car)

Obviously you could illuminate these rings either directly at the ends, or remotely using the fibre, using bright white LEDs instead of a bulb.

The only big problem with LEDs is that they are dimmer than bulbs,  even the brightest, and have a very narrow viewing angle (around 20-30 degrees) You need many of these all together to illuminate the fibre adequately. Blue ones tend to be brighter, but would be illegal in UK.

Cheers.

I paid £138(inc P&P) for the 8000K Hella HID kit, £100 for the angel eye kit and the replacement lenses should be about £100.

Ok well having gotten the bug i have tried to find any and all information i can on hids and angels and found one place that does them both in one package.

http://www.xenonvalot.com/xenonsys.html have 3 different offers for the E34.

E34 Celis Ring / Angel Eye kit:
HALOGEN-housings to replace the existing H1 DE housings339,00 € £225

plus delivery i imagine which puts it on par with quality-bmw on ebay.
-------------------------------
E34 Celis Ring / Angel Eye kit:
E34 (1988 - 1995) low beam xenonkit 769,00 € £511
-------------------------------
E34 Celis Ring / Angel Eye kit:
E34 (1988 - 1995) low & highbeam xenonkit 1199,00 € £797

Now as much as i love to spend money and itching to buy the 3rd one here i don't see the point as i very rarely use my high beams and as such would spend 300 quid nearly on them staying off.

The 2nd option however is a very attractive offer considering that you get hella/philips ballasts, D2S bulbs and they are setup for the E34.

Andy can i ask what you ended up paying for your hids and angels to gauge it against the above to see whether singles and diy are a better option.

I suppose I was just the first one to push out the boat and try them.

I'll get some info on the fibre optics posted tonight.

Cheers.

I just did a search on ebay.de for E34 HID and it came up with the auction for the Hella Kit . I have also ordered a Angel Eye kit from Surelight, they are made using Electro Luminescent wire so should be much whiter and brighter than the normal kits. I am also going to replace all the headlight lenses at the same time.

God dammit, I'll have to buy some now, and I'd convinced myself they were naff so I wouldnt have to bother.

Best Wishes

The Depo's are glass lenses. But if you want the original look it may be better to buy new OE Hella lenses and seperate them in the oven. The Hella angel eyes rings themselves with the fibre optic connector are reasonably cheap now.

The HID's are certainly less tiring to drive with on unlit roads. It is amazing the way you get a pool of light in front of the car. The sharp cut off and superb kerb illumination means safe driving in the towns.

Rain and snow (oddly) doesn't seem to glare the same way as it did with the filament H1 bulbs, about the same in fog, so still need the driving lights here.

The reason for the angel eyes is better visibility to other motorists as well as individuality. I haven't seen another E34 with them (Yet !!!)  unless you guys get in on the act !!

Russ, it might be cheaper just to buy some aftermarket angel eyes and put them in your original lights if you want to keep the factory look ?

Andy i think when i get mine i will try and replace the lenses so as to keep the subtle look. I imagine the depo lenses will be glued in which case heating them up with a heat gun like i did with the OEM lenses should separate them from the cluster in order to glue on some OEM lenses. Or are the lenses plastic? if so then that may pose a problem with them melting :).
