Well i need no further convincing, that looks the absolute mutts nuts.

If you get a chance can you take a picture of the car with all 4 lights in view with the angels on so i can see the overall look from the front.

Buy it now here i come :)

They look really impressive, did your car come with HID lights or did you retro-fit them yourself?  I think they finish off the look nicely.

Also, you don't happen to have the part number of the ball mountings do you?  I've searched high and low on my ETK and I can't find it anywhere!

If Badger doesn't mind i will answer the questions for him, the 6000 Kelvin H1 Bulb HID's are a retrofit and the ball mountings are available from GSF car parts for about 20p each.

Hi folks, would have replied earlier,  but hedge and lawn cutting took priority this morning !!

In answer to silverbmw528, the kit was bought off ebay and is made by Depo. As I mentioned in the other topic's postings (new angel eyes)

(http://www.bmwcarclubgb.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8768&PN=1) , the kits need a bit of fiddling to get the best out of the parts.

Paul, the HID kit was purchased from Proxenon in USA and is a Bohmen 6K H1 kit. The ball mountings (Ooh Matron.....) are in the ETK on diagram 63-0042 and are part 11, 63 12 1 378 369 and are 56p plus VAT each.

I think the improvement in overall visibility in the half light is worth the outlay. The little crescents in the top of the original smileys were a bit on the small side.

Downsides are likely to be the expense of having to get another set if any of the lenses got cracked. I would have preferred the fresnel look of the original main beams to the clear front of the kit, but you can't have everything I suppose. Also, the kit uses a feed off the original side light plug to actuate a relay. The main power is fed to the relay from a cable with an inline fuse holder. (Wasn't a problem on mine as I have a fuse/relay holder with a juicy feed from the big engine bay terminal.

If you take the power off the nearside plug, then the parking light facility which would ordinarily turn on the offside lights (if you park legally facing the correct way) wouldn't operate. Something else to bear in mind is the power requirement. There are 14 bulbs at around 3W, that's 3.5A for the sidelights alone. Not a problem on the move,  but a battery killer if they are left on for a few hours.

Thanks guys, you both answered my questions there, just found them on the ETK thanks to your help Andy, BMW's description of "Black rubber bushing" isn't really helpful when you're not sure which bit it's supposed to be in the first place 

I really need to change both sets of headlights, one side has corroded reflectors and water ingression and the other side are badly fitted, slightly chipped, replacements with the chrome rings missing (previous owner!).  Now I have to decide whether to go angel eyes or not, hmmmm decisions decisions!

Just looking at my pics again, it's amazing how many stone chips there are on the paintwork. That's one of the reasons I changed the lamp units over. After 155k miles, the lenses were looking a bit worse for wear from being sandblasted.

I decided I needed to change all four, so may as well go the whole hog.

Andy i think when i get mine i will try and replace the lenses so as to keep the subtle look. I imagine the depo lenses will be glued in which case heating them up with a heat gun like i did with the OEM lenses should separate them from the cluster in order to glue on some OEM lenses. Or are the lenses plastic? if so then that may pose a problem with them melting :).

Russ, it might be cheaper just to buy some aftermarket angel eyes and put them in your original lights if you want to keep the factory look ?

The HID's are certainly less tiring to drive with on unlit roads. It is amazing the way you get a pool of light in front of the car. The sharp cut off and superb kerb illumination means safe driving in the towns.

Rain and snow (oddly) doesn't seem to glare the same way as it did with the filament H1 bulbs, about the same in fog, so still need the driving lights here.

The reason for the angel eyes is better visibility to other motorists as well as individuality. I haven't seen another E34 with them (Yet !!!)  unless you guys get in on the act !!

The Depo's are glass lenses. But if you want the original look it may be better to buy new OE Hella lenses and seperate them in the oven. The Hella angel eyes rings themselves with the fibre optic connector are reasonably cheap now.

I just did a search on ebay.de for E34 HID and it came up with the auction for the Hella Kit . I have also ordered a Angel Eye kit from Surelight, they are made using Electro Luminescent wire so should be much whiter and brighter than the normal kits. I am also going to replace all the headlight lenses at the same time.
