Ok had the car 2 days and the clutch is slipping

Let me add this 1st clutch thats gone on any car i have had and i have not been doing donuts!

Question

Genuine or eurocarparts?

How much am i looking at for genuine clutch?

Does anyone do a repair book for this car eg haynes?

Anyone who has done this job anything i need to know before i pull it apart,

Im  certain i can do this job just need bit of info before i borrow my friends pit.Warranty does not cover and im skint after buying the car so no other option.

Or does anyone know anywhere i can get a performance clutch or something better than original clutch?

Ps can the clutch be adjusted on this model?

Hi Mate,

If I was you I would go with the original clutch, there are performance clutches like Autowerke but they are expensive and for the road you wont see any benefits.

I think a clutch costs around £250 for the parts, that is from memory.

Not sure about fitting it, it would be similar to any other car to be honest. Also the clutch is hydraulic self adjusting, if you have the evo it is probably worth changing the clutch hose to a braided steel one if I was you get it all done in one go.

cheers AL i will get to the dealers tommorow see what they say and get a price for a clutch kit also will see about that braided hose too.

My clutch also slips occasionally, but i find the worst problem is that it only does anything right at the bottom of its travel(on the floor).  I thought it may need adjusting but if it is auto hydraulic adjusting, does this mean i need a new one?

The genuine BMW clutch is made by Sachs. I just went to my local motor factors (who happen to be a Sachs agent) and got the clutch kit from them. It's nearly half the price

Fitting is no different to any other clutch. Just make sure you dont put any grease on the sleeve that the release bearing slides on. All the later bearings are on a plastic carrier, and this sticks and causes problems if you grease it. You do need to grease the pivot points for the release arm though. You are also supposed to replace the plastic pivot pin that one end of the release arm sits on.

I would not suggest doing it yourself if you don't have access to a decent car lift. The 6 speed box is increadibly heavy, and is not practical to remove on axle stands.

As Ian says the Box is heavy, mind you so is the std exhaust.

As long as you have a mate to help you and get the rear of the car nice and high, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

This is when i did mine back in 02.

Hi all again

Clutch pretty good at mo has not slipped again but probably will do soon, Anyhows there is a rally car centre near where i work they do work on subaru's and mitsubishi's,toyota's etc.

they quoted me £150 to fit the clutch kit which i think is not too bad. I have seen some  really nice cars having work done there so im pretty satisfied that they can carry out the work on my car.

So bmw clutch is a saches clutch yes? and if so euro do that clutch kit i think its £175+vat seems ok but if that is expensive please inform me!!

£150 to fit sounds pretty good to me,

What is the price of the clutch straight from BMW? If i remember i'm sure mine was around £150 after the getting the surcharge back for the old unit.

Got a quote from trainer bmw (south wales) £199+vat and £51+vat for the braided hose modification that everyone's talking about

 

so just wait now probably a few weeks it has not slipped since sunday

Im guessing that is just for the parts only? Was that with any discount? I always ask for a discount or trade price when approaching dealers/part suppliers, and have always got it. (maybe it is the bat?) ;)

Ok, It does help, but just blag it, say that you are fitting for a customer of yours, etc., they generally will give you something. Just be confident when you say it.

Bigbird, have you tried the BMW specialist on Fabian Way, exactly the same parts but cheaper in price. Ive had quotes for Discs etc and are almost half the price. 01792 460061. www.sw-bmw.co.uk might be worth asking for a quote for fitting.

There is a garage behind Trainers where an ex-Trainer mechanic has set up on his own.

He even uses his connections to get genuine BMW parts!

Hi,
I've used trainers and rydales cardiff crap and Don't bother with fabian way total rip offs and they don't know their stuff, Bryn Motors Workshop behind Trainers are excellent Gary the owner was former trainers tech for 20 yrs.
Take the rd behind Trainers past hewden hire take next left into compound end unit.
