Hi All,

I just went out to my car to move it and when i pulled the outer door handle up to open the door i heard a rather worrying sound (like something plastic breaking). Now the door will not hold shut unless i slam it really firmly or push hard from the outside I have just checked the door striker plate and a piece of plastic seems to have snapped off from the top corner, would this cause the door not to shut properly as i thought the door lock closed over the cylindrical centre part of the striker plate ? Or has something broken inside the door lock itself ?

Any help appreciated.

Here is a picture of the striker plate, the cylindrical plastic part seems to move whereas on the other 3 doors it does not so i think this is what is causing the problem ?

-that bit doesn't look too bad to me. Unless it comes loose on the door frame, or breaks up altogether, it won't cause big problems. I think you have an internal problem of some kind in the door. Really the driver's door lock mechanism needs to be accessed for lubrication once every five years- otherwise they just go dry and wear out or break.

cheers

I just took the car to my mechanic and he is quite confident that it is the striker plate, i have managed to source a striker plate and latch for £14 on ebay

Apologies to Brucey, it seems that it was the door latch mechanism that was causing the problem. I have replaced it and the door now latches as normal
