525 Lights (or Lack Of)

   Coming down the A40 last night driving on dipped head they suddendly went out! Bit of a panin, head lights worked ok, but not liked my cars in front! Used my (fog) lights but a about a mile down the road the dipped heads came on again. This happened over some 20 miles or so, on off, driving me nuts. 

My idea of whats wrong or going wrong. When you park up leaving the side lights on, the nearside switches off automaticly? I think that somehow or other this switch is causing my problem but have no idea where it's located or, if I find it, what to do with it.Help....
