Hello all,

I know this subject has been on here before but for the life of me I cant find it!

So here goes-What is the fan that is behind the grille but in front of the radiator? And how is it supposed to work? I tried to turn mine ( With the help of a screwdriver to reach the blades ) but it was VERY stiff. Almost impossible to turn. Is it easy to change and i have noidea what it is for!

Thanks......... E39 520i SE BTW

Yes it's the auxiliary fan which should turn on when the air con is switched on and also if the car starts to overheat....They are about £300ish from a main dealer and cheaper from GSF Car Parts/Eurocarparts. I think you have to remove the front bumper to replace it.

Should they spin freely when the engine is off?

I would have thought so, it is quite common for them to seize up....It should turn on as soon as you turn the airconditioning on.
