Hi all,

I have a std 96 328 sports coupe, I want to give it a fatter look at the back and improve grip

At present I have Mitch P 235 40 17 all round, I will leave the fronts and want to increase the back as much poss without having to worry about rub, arch mods, new suspension etc etc  One tyre depot claimed I can get away with 235 40 17 fronts & 255 35 17 on the rears.comments please on this..

Would be best to hear from someone who has a live example of trouble free fattness and grip.

Many thanks to all in advance

H

Hi Hybrid

I've got the same car, same year, and i have just  changed my rears(goodyear f1's). i was also looking for something wider due to the lack of traction and was told not to go any wider on the existing rims because the rims on 96 models are 7.5 inc wide all round, hence should'nt go larger than 235's on the tyres, therefore i kept with the 235's.

However, the 98 model has 7.5wide rims at the front with 225 wide rubber, and 8.5 wide rims at back with 245 rubber. good luck if you can find two of these cheap!

At the same time, my alloys are corroded quite badly, so am thinking of changing the alloys altogether for Toora alloys (8 inc wide), and run the same tyre profiles as the 98 model.

Hope this helped

Ket

Hi, i used to have one of these and i found after lots of tyres that the 235/40/17 F1's hwere the best all round for wear and grip. You can go wider on the rear but not no the front as it won't clear the strut.

The later models do have the 225 on the front and 245 on the rear just like the m3 evo's. This was done to make the car more balanced as it is easy to stick the arse end out when 235's are on the front.

But i now have an m3 evo and have realised that it is the type of diff that is in the 328 sport (Plate type which has a stong preload) and this is why it is less grippy at the back compared to the 328.

Hope this is of some help and if i were you i would just learn to enjoy the rear wheel steering.
