Just suddenly occured to me this morning driving to work when I got a bit of interference on my car radio.

Where the diddely is the radio aerial on my 98 S E39 523i?

I am new to the World of BMW's so excuse the silly question.

I'm not positive, as I have the model before yours, but it may be in the rear screen ( as thats where mine was).
Best Wishes

Thanks guys.

I had wondered about it being part of the rear screen as I have lines on the rear screen that look like the heater elements but don't actually clear the screen when its on, I guess they must be the aerial!

Hi, the rear screen aerial is also aided by amplifiers for the fm and am frequencies. These are situated in the rear  C pillar, and should be subbed if poor reception is an issue, before replacing the rear screen.

Cheers,Dan

Andrew,
regarding your question in another post re garages near Glasgow;
go to www.unixnerd.demon.co.uk/bmw.html
and scroll down the left hand menu to the "good garage guide".
These are recommendations from guys that have actually used the
various garages around.

Richard.

On a related issue. There must be a fault with my amplifier as when I turn on the rear screen heater with the radio on, the radio is drowned out by static. I've had the pillar cover off and reseated all the connections, but to no avail. As a new unit costs around £90, is anyone aware of the internal intricacies of this sealed box and whether there are any serviceable parts ? (I can handle a soldering iron !).

Thanks.

Ian, it's possibly an earthing issue elsewhere in the car. Check all eathing straps to ensure they are in good condition. I have known garages leave the odd one off after service/repairs. The amps in the rear pillars are not user serviceable items, but is unlikely to be the cause unless physically damaged or subjected to some strong power surge. If the rear srceen heater is not demisting the glass then I suspect the problem is related to common electrics.. i.e back to earthing again etc. If you receive "normal" strength radio reception (AM mode) with the engine off then it suggests the antenna is fine, hence back to the interference caused by earthing.

Hi, this may well turn out to be a problem with the rear screen itself. It's quite common on E46 3 series. Try subbing the amp first if poss from a donor car, and if thats ok it may well be the screen-fairly common replacement in dealers.

Dan

Deja vu or what, just read my earlier post-LOL!
