Hi Folks,

Over the past couple of weeks I have noticed that cranking the engine is taking a second or so rather that an instant.  On Friday when I started I got a clicking from the dashboard before the engine finally caught.  Then low and behold on Sunday I just got the click and the engine wouldn't even turn over.  A set of jump leads and a good friend later things were fine.  The car started this morning but I can only think my battery might be on its last legs.  Been in the car for about 3 1/2 years.  So my questions are...

1) Are these symptoms that inidcate a 'dead' battery

2) Is there any other componants worth a check (i.e. Alternator)

3) Assuming I need a new battery any recommendations?  Should I stick with O.E.M for dealer, can I get O.E.M. form German and Swedish etc for less?  Or is there an aftermarket which performs as well or better?

4) The financial impacts?!

Thanks for you help !

I would say that it does sound like your battery is on the way out.

I would get one from halfords, but then that's just me biggrin

Get a high capacity Bosch Silver from GSF Car Parts for around £50 (and a 10% discount if you are a member of the BMW Car Club GB)

Defo sound like a dodgy battery.

Get shot of the old one asap as you don't want to be jump starting your engine all the time as you may run the risk of damaging part of the electrical system.

New Battery from GSF?  Just under £50

Confidence you car will start every time - Priceless!

Purchased the Bosch Silver unit that Miles had recommended.  Installed last night and the car catches straight away again!  I also noticed that the interior lights 'seem' brighter - not sure if this is pyscological or not!

None the less I'm best pleased

Yep, Halfords without a doubt, 5 Year no question warranty, that says it all. Have one on both of mine.
