Hi,

Anyone know of a good 6-series specialist not a million miles from the West Midlands? My 635 has some irritating wheel judder which I'd like to get sorted, and I'm aware that sometimes takes a little while (and hence money) to track down.

I've spoken to a couple of puported BMW specialists who claimed to be "6 series experts" but obviously weren't, so any recommendations appreciated.

If you find one, let everyone know. I have an M635, which no-one can sort. BMW dealers run a mile. Running correctly, the engine sings, with lots of torque and excellent throttle response. I have driven several which are lethargic and peaky, with no real grunt.  I cannot work out if it is a sensor, MAF or ECU problem. I did find out that a new set of plugs took 1.5secs off the 0-60 time, but its still a good 2 secs slow.

I had a really bad judder which turned out to be air in the power steering. A top up and quick bleed made a world of difference.

That "irritating wheel judder" can be caused by lots of things such as bushes, balljoints, wheel bearings, wheel balance, warped discs etc.

It's not rocket science so take a look & see what looks the most worn & go from there.

I've heard that tie-rods etc can need replacing every couple of years. Speed bumps & potholes will not help any.

18 months, more like, if you live in the London area

I've never come across a 6-series only specialist
anywhere - even the likes of Jaymic and Munich
Legends don't specialise in them. I'd be inclined to
find a classic car or BMW specialist - talk to them
about the car first to work out their levels of sympathy
for it.
If the judder is coming up through the steering
column between 40-60mph, it might well be the
upper control arm bushes - a notorious weak spot
on E24s. A complete arm with bush is about £40
(you need two), and replacement is a DIY job if you
can wield a socket set accurately, although you do
need the right type and size of ball joint splitter.
Hope this helps
Dan Stevens

Just like solicitors!

Munich Legends may not be 6-series only but they know more about them than most.

another suggestion that made a big difference on my M6 - have the steering box adjusted back to correct tolerance - made an enormous difference and made me wonder whether countless discs had been disposed of needlessly....
