Car YR2000 E39

BMW Buisness In dash CD with multi function display, tuner etc below.

Problem: Volume knob has stopped working, won't turn up/down or turn off/on. All other functions of the multi function display are OK.

Thing's tried: Removed the multi function display, opened it, visibly inspected the potentiometer controling volume and on/off look's fine, and connections etc are sound. note radio functions without the display connected, and upon reconnection see's the display and all other functions except the volume knob.

Removed the three associated fuses to "reboot" the radio system, no change.

Dunno what to try next, so I said I'd ask those who may have gone before, or seen this and know how to remedy.

A variable resistor......I think the volume is actually digitally controlled in most modern units i.e. when you turn the knob the volume control circuit just receives a digital input requesting an increase or decrease in the volume...I had the same problem with an Alpine DVD Head unit which was fixed under warranty...
